HIGH FASHION . ZERO CRUELTY
GUNAS is an independent high fashion label with a cause! Started in 2009 by designer and animal lover, Sugandh G. Agrawal, GUNAS’s heart and soul screams to be the voice of animals. With an award winning design and business background, Sugandh quit her 7-year corporate career as an Industrial designer at KitchenAid to start her own brand of cruelty-free fashion in New York. Her mission is strong and clear. Animals are NOT meant to be a part of fashion. We can look and feel good without harming other living beings. We need to connect our selves with what goes on behind the scenes and question our actions and their impacts.
What initially began as an all MADE IN NYC label, has now gone global to source and manufacture bags and shoes using artisan and small-scale ethical manufacturers from countries such as India, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil and Hong Kong. With styles ranging from totes, satchels, cross-body bags, wallets and backpacks GUNAS has a bag to suit your every mood and lifestyle need.
Here is the background from the Designer Herself – Sugandh:
Hi there! I’m Sugandh, (Sue-gun-d) the designer and artist behind GUNAS. I have been trained as an industrial designer and am dedicated to utilizing my fashion skills and business acumen for a cause very close to my heart. Having grown up in India, a country where cows are worshipped and ironically also slaughtered for their meat and skin I witnessed this cruelty first hand and knew deep within that I had to do something about it someday.
In 2001 I moved to the United States and received my Bachelor in Fine Arts, Industrial design degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio. I also hold a Masters in Design Management from the Pratt Institute in New York. While at Pratt, I met a leather handbag designer. We had a long conversation and strongly disagreed over the effects of leather and the ignorance of its users. That’s when I had my big “Aha” moment. This was it! This is what I need to do. The Universe had given me a sign. So, as a part of my thesis I developed a business plan and came up with GUNAS, a 100% animal friendly handbag brand. I was already keeping leather out of my closet and knew there had to be several others that felt the same way.
With the help of family and friends I put all my life savings into building GUNAS from the ground up. The initial days of entrepreneurship were hard and yet enjoyable. I started the company in my one bedroom apartment in Manhattan and recall walking several blocks in the city on a daily basis carrying boxes of fabrics and samples for GUNAS a dream I knew I had to turn into reality. My passion and perseverance never became dull even for a moment. I’ve had to push my comfort zone and really put myself out on the line. But I believe that when you are out to do good, all the forces of the universe will conspire to make things happen in your favor.
In 2014 my husband and I were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. I’ve never so strongly felt more responsible for leaving behind a happier and healthier planet for our future generations than I do now. I listened to my critics and deeply thank my early adopters. You’ve helped the brand evolve so much over the past years and with your support, I aspire to continue making beautiful and meaningful products that appeal to everyone; saving the lives of animals and touching the lives of those that make our products, one bag at a time.
THE BRAND MANIFESTO
We are committed to being a 100% vegan brand. We believe that animals are not a “property” of humans. We are against the human nature of bullying and the desire to dominate all other species. We stand up to the culture of violence and suffering that we inherited against our will. Justice, empathy and compassion are our core values. We envision a world of peace, love and kindness that starts with each one of us.We advocate conscious consumerism over fast fashion. We make “victim-free” fashion full of love for all. We will not participate in any kind of exploitation, be it towards our planet, people or animals.
Veganism is a lifestyle choice that’s all about protecting animals by avoiding the use of objects made from animals, animal by-products or using animal testing. Let’s just understand that Leather is “not”a by-product of the meat industry. Raising animals for food and leather requires huge amounts of feed, pasture land, water, and fossil fuels. Turning skin into leather requires massive amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes, many of them cyanide-based. Most leathers are chrome-tanned, a lot of which gets washed away into our fresh water supplies during the process of making leather. People who work in tanneries or live close by often suffer from cancer, lung damage caused by exposure to toxic chemicals used to process and dye the leather. “Non-leather” alternatives account for only a fraction of petroleum used in contrast to leather. Leather not only causes suffering for the animals but also causes harm to our environment, the people that produce it and also those who choose to wear it.
